Climate Adaptation Business Challenge 2013
In 2013 Knowledge for Climate and Climate-KIC Netherlands organized the worlds’ first business competition on climate adaptation: the Climate Adaptation Business Challenge. A MatchMaking event marked the kick-off of the Challenge, where entrepreneurs, researchers, professionals and policy makers came together to explore new business opportunities. After selection by a professional jury the 10 most promising ideas were awarded with financials support and business coaching to further develop their proposals into high-quality business plans. These business plans were pitched at the Final Event in November 2013. The ten finalist and other inspiring speakers showed that climate adaptation is beyond the stage of research and policy development only: climate adaptation offers great opportunities for business and new startups.
The first prize winner of the Climate Adaptation Business Challenge 2013 was the 'Zilte Aardappel' (salt tolerant potato) by Arjen de Vos, co-owner of Zilt Proefbedrijf – Tested on Texel. With the business plan for this salt tolerant potato he received the first prize: an amount of 25,000 euro of Knowledge for Climate to put this potato on the market. "This is a type of potato that grows on saline land and is watered with brackish water. Through increasing drought due to climate change, salinization of agricultural land is increasing. Not only in the Netherlands but also worldwide. This potato demonstrates that freshwater is not necessary for agriculture. Brackish water is also good to use!" says Arjen de Vos.
Second prizes were received by Leon Simons with his 'Magic Mitad' and Rutger Hogezand with the 'Agridrone'. The third prize went to Arnold van Vliet with 'Nature Reports'.
